Today we commemorate 21 years since the 9/21 earthquake of 1999. We continue to mourn the more than 2,415 killed and 11,305 injured victims of that tragic event. Taiwan has faced many natural disasters, and since the destruction wrought by the 9/21 earthquake, Taiwan has worked hard to develop its ability to respond to the various kinds of emergencies, and become a model of disaster preparedness for the region. The United States and Taiwan share a commitment to assisting other countries as they prepare for and respond to natural disasters. Taiwan has become one of the world’s most generous donors of assistance, including for counties managing the spread and impacts of COVID-19. The United States and Taiwan will continue to come together to share our experiences and expertise with the world through Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) workshops on disaster resilience.
